The Soweto School of Art

Brief History…

The Soweto School of Art has been identified and defined in the pioneering book - “South African Fine Art – The Soweto School of Art”. The book is the culmination of a 27-year dedicated study of a specific group of untrained South African, black male fine artists who lived and worked in Soweto, South Africa. The timeline within which the body of artworks created by the group appears, spans the period 1960 through 2010, marking the height of apartheid rule in South Africa. The psychological effects of significant historical events on the lives and daily activities of the black people living in Soweto at the time can be identified within their compositions. Their artworks became the documents through which they visually captured the history and heritage of a people in their fight for freedom and democracy.

“The identification and definition of the Soweto School of Art group consisting exclusively of black fine artists, makes them the first school of art or art movement, to emerge from the African continent, marking a significant milestone in the history of art.” - Prof. T. Mills, USA
