The gallery was established in 1996 in Rosebank, Johannesburg, South Africa by the founder Martin G. Britz. For Martin, the opening of the gallery was a natural extension of following his passion working with a group of unrecognized black male fine artists active in Soweto, South Africa at the time. Soweto Fine Art has grown from strength to strength the past 25 years, from its humble beginnings exhibiting less than ten artists to become the African art powerhouse representing the foremost black fine artists from the Sub-Saharan region. The gallery is the home of the Soweto School Of Art is the first black fine art movement or school of art to emerge from the African continent. The group was first identified by Martin G. Britz in 1998 as he described it in his first draft manuscript archived at the Smithsonian Institute, the Museum of African Art, Washington, DC, USA in 1998. In November 2018 after thirty three yearlong dedicated study the final manuscript of Martin’s book “South African Fine Art –The Soweto School of Art” , Master volume, ISBN 978-1-920668-00-6 was approved for publication by the moderator Prof. Terry Mills, Dean of the Division Social Sciences &The Humanities at Morehouse College, Atlanta, GA, USA
